Wright City rallies in win over Elsberry, loss to Battle

The Wright City Lady Wildcats mounted a second half rally but were unable to score the game-tying goal in their loss to Battle last week.

Two days after overcoming a 2-0 deficit to beat Elsberry 3-2, Wright City fell to Battle 3-2. The Lady Wildcats trailed 3-0 early in the second half before goals from sophomores Paige Rees and Paige Kirn pulled Wright City within one goal.

“The fact that we got down 3-0 in this one and then still fought back and made it a game at the end, it’s huge for resilience and competition level,” Wright City girls soccer coach Jacob Wallace said. “Especially since the way we were playing at the beginning of the week wasn’t so great.”

Wright City controlled possession for most of the first half but was unable to score in the opening half. Wright City’s best chance came with less than a minute remaining in the half when Kirn hit the crossbar off of a free kick.

Battle was able to capitalize on their chances in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

“It’s just little moments in the game where we ease up just a little bit on the back and some people are just doing a little bit of watching as opposed to stepping to and marking…That’s always a thing that’s going to happen if they let up at all. Just learning,” Wallace said.

With last week’s win over Elsberry in the middle of the week, Wright City avenged a loss to Elsberry earlier this season. After falling behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game, Wright City fought back to score the last three goals of the game in their 3-2 win.

“We just settled in, started playing better defense,” Wallace said. “Got more chances in the second half for sure.”

Wallace touted the competitiveness the Lady Wildcats showed in Friday’s game against Battle. With the regular season ending this week, Wallace stressed the strides Wright City can take in the offseason to reach the next level.

“Now it’s more let’s start thinking about through the offseason how we can commit and how we can get better,” Wallace said. “Because that’s where the next level for this group is probably going to be is committing for a full year and getting better technically and playing more with each other is going to be huge too. Since we’re a young team, they have opportunities to do it if they take advantage of them.”

Wright City is slated to conclude the regular season with a road game at Sullivan. They will play St. Charles West Saturday in the first round of the Class 2, District 3 tournament.
