Wildcats win one, drop two over past week

The Wright City girls basketball team used 31 points from Jasmin Simpson and a strong start to the second half to defeat Bourbon High School last week and rebound after a pair of early week losses.
The Wildcats (6-12) built a double digit lead in the second half they would never relinquish. They won the game 58-36.
“The whole night we had the thought process of we’re going to pressure the ball,” Wright City girls basketball coach Abby Modaff said after last Wednesday’s game. “We played full court really which is our defense and we played together as a unit. I tell the kids that it’s not five individuals. It’s one unit out there.”
Modaff also believes the crowd support was a factor. There were more people in the gym than the Wildcats have seen in years for a girls basketball game, Modaff said.
After building a 27-14 halftime lead, the Wildcats started the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 39-16 lead.
“I told the girls that the third quarter was probably their best quarter all night,” Modaff said. “Which was different from our last several games where we came out flat. So it was good to see that we’re kind of moving in the right direction.”
The Wildcats dropped a pair of games Friday and Monday against Clopton and Van Far. The Wildcats dropped the game at Clopton 65-32. Simpson paced the Wildcats’ offensive attack with 19 points. Katie Schanuel added six points.
“This was our fourth game of the week and with our team sharing many players between JV and varsity,” Modaff said. “We were tired and a little beat up by game time on Friday. We came out pretty flat in the first half and got ourselves in a hole that was difficult to get out of. After we regrouped during halftime, we came out with more energy and a want for the ball but still fell short in the long run.”
Over the course of the season, Modaff has seen many improvements made by the team. She said the team’s defense is a bright spot.
The Wildcats dropped Monday’s home game against Van Far 67-34. Simpson scored 28 points for the Wildcats. Kaedyn Johnson added six points to round out the scoring for Wright City.
Wright City was scheduled to host Silex Wednesday. Wright City is slated to host Wellsville Thursday. They will play Bowling Green on the road Tuesday.
