The Wright City and Warrenton cross country teams ran in the Warrenton Invitational on Oct. 4. Nine Warren County runners set either a personal best time or a season best time.

The day started with the varsity girls race. Wright City sophomore Adalyn Ferrell ran a season best time of 22 minutes, 12 seconds, finishing in ninth place out of 40 runners.

Lindsay Pettus was the other Wildcat that ran in the girls race. Pettus finished 30th in 25:18. Pettus has been keeping her time consistent throughout the season around the 25-minute mark.

Warrenton also saw success on the course. Ava Schneider led the Warriors and finished 23rd in 24:04 for a personal best. Abigail Kackley placed 32nd in 25:58, Melanie Guerrero finished 34th in 26:46 and Sophie Bennett finished 36th in 27:00.

Bennett ran a bit slower compared to other meets, but Head Coach Jeremy Collins noted that she started the week with a great workout.

“I’m hoping she can have a great time along with everybody else, but she’s been working really hard and has a great attitude,” Collins said.

The boys varsity race took place afterwards. Three out of the four runners for Wright City had season best times.

Leading the way for the Wildcats, Matthew Johnston finished 27th for a personal best time of 19:38. James Guinn also had a season best time of 21:23, along with Marshall Matz who ran the 5K in 25:18.

Cade Hornberger finished 49th in 22:58.

For the Warriors, Jacob Beckemyer had a season best time of 18:25 and placed seventh overall. Jonathan Sweitzer set a personal record time, placing 31st in 20:07.

Matthew Craven finished 13th in 18:46, Dylan Coleman finished 22nd in 19:08, Trenton Hummel placed 38th in 20:49 and Korben Johnson finished 45th in 21:37.

Lastly in the junior varsity race, Ken Le ran for a personal record of 22:41 and Noah Joens had a personal record time of 29:02.

Collins noted that between new people racing and more people starting to get comfortable running the 5K course, he is starting to see everything piece together.

“As the season goes on, hopefully we’ll see more personal records and season best times at the end of the season,” Collins said. “That’s a combination of things, but the hard work and just getting comfortable racing the 5K distance is a big thing.”

Collins is also hoping to be in the top half of districts as the postseason nears.

“Point-wise, we’re more on the second bottom part, but there’s a lot of room to improve and if we can move up a couple spots here and there, we could be able to be in the top half of districts,” Collins said.

This Saturday, the Warriors will travel to Illinois at Principia College for the Border Wars meet. The Wildcats will run again on Oct. 10 in the Orchard Farm Invitational.
