When Liberty Christian junior Lauren Moss scored her 1,000th point earlier this month, it was a milestone that she had strived to reach — and one that she knew she could.
“Reaching 1,000 points was a goal I set for myself at the beginning of the season. I believed it was achievable with dedication and effort, and I’m proud to have accomplished it,” she said. “It means a lot to me. It’s a testament to the countless hours of practice and the support of my teammates and coaches. It’s a milestone that signifies personal achievement but also reflects the collective effort of the team.”
Liberty Christian coach Kim Meyer, in her first year as head coach, said she also knew that this was a goal Moss could reach.
“She has an amazing three-point shot but isn’t afraid to create her own shot from anywhere,” she said, also noting that Moss is averaging 20.4 points, 1.6 assists, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game.
The accolades didn’t stop there.
“Lauren is a stellar player and without her on the court the team just isn’t the same. But even more so off the court her leadership shines bright. She is someone that her peers easily follow because she has genuine care for others,” said Meyer. “Lauren is the type of person that will work a room. She will approach anyone and genuinely ask how their life is going. She really does pay attention and knows you and knows about you. She works hard in every area of her life – on the court, in the classroom, at church, or at work, and she does it without complaining.”
Moss also thinks highly of her Liberty Christian coach.
“Coach Meyer has been a tremendous influence on me both on and off the court. Her spiritual guidance, mentorship, and belief in my abilities have been invaluable during this season’s basketball journey,” said Moss, who also had good things to say about another coach who has helped her along the way, Butch Clark. “Coach Clark encouraged me to be a better free throw shooter and to take the shots at the three point line. I’m also grateful for the influence of other coaches who have helped shape my skills and mentality as a player.”
And not surprisingly, Moss was sure to thank family, teammates, and anyone else who has been a part of her journey.
“My biggest inspirations in basketball have been my parents, who have always supported and encouraged me, and several other players whose dedication and skill I admire. Additionally, my coaches have played a significant role in shaping my game and instilling in me the values of hard work and teamwork,” she said. “I’ve been fortunate to have had supportive and talented teammates both now and in the past. Their teamwork, encouragement and support have been crucial in helping me reach this milestone. Without their contributions, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
Meyer summed up the player — and the person — she seems to truly enjoy coaching.
“Lauren is someone everyone around her easily celebrates,” she said. “Her biggest strength is her fighting spirit, she loves people and she wants to please God.”
