Kackley, Claiborne log top-five finishes

The Warrenton Warriors competed at the Clayton Invitational last week in their final tuneup before the district cross country competition this weekend.

Warrenton seniors Phillip Kackley and Wyatt Claiborne both registered top-five finishes at the Clayton Invitational last week. Kackley led all Warrior runners with a second place finish. He finished the 5K race in 16:52.

“About halfway through the race, Phillip took the lead and was looking strong,” Warrenton cross country coach Jeremy Collins said. “However, Landon Pogue of Hillsboro was able to pull away to capture the win.”

Claiborne placed fifth in the competition with a time of 17:19.

“Wyatt ran very tough and he looked really strong,” Collins said.

Jacob Beckemeyer, Matt Craven and Noah Cline also registered counting times for the Warriors. Beckemyer placed 55th with a time of 19:09, Craven placed 58th with a time of 19:27 and Cline placed 70th with a time of 19:59. Warrenton placed sixth out of 14 teams in the competition.

Collins said one of the keys for Warrenton heading into districts will be closing the gap between Claiborne and their next three runners.

“Having Bryan (Guerrero) for districts next week will help with that,” Collins said. “That is going to be the key for the boys team to qualify for state.  If we can have a minute and a half between our second runner and our fifth runner, I think that should put us in a great position to possibly qualify for state.”

Collins said there could be four teams potentially battling for the final two spots to qualify for state as a team.

The Warrenton Lady Warriors placed ninth out of 10 teams at the competition. They were led by freshman Alexis Ruff, who placed 36th with a time of 22:59. She missed a medal by one spot.

“This was her second time running sub-23 minutes,” Collins said. “She has run very consistently all year and she does an excellent job moving up during the race.”

Camryn Petersmeyer finished with the second fastest time among all Lady Warrior runners with a time of 23:16, which was her second fastest time of the season. She placed 40th.

“She had been in a little slump but she had an amazing race,” Collins said. “She did a great job in the second half of the race pushing herself.”

Briana Grooms placed 60th with a time of 24:40. Teammate Ashlynn Reeves placed 64th. She ran the 5K in 25:54. She ran her second fastest time of her career. Reeves missed a personal record by 1.3 seconds. Jadyn Hopper placed 70th with a time of 27:12, which was a personal record.

“She missed all of last season due to injury, but she has really run tough this year and she has made a ton of progress,” Collins said.

Warrenton will compete in the Class 4, District 3 meet Oct. 28 at St. Vincent Park. The Warriors will compete on the same course that last week’s meet was held.

“This should give them an advantage just knowing the course a little better,” Collins said. “They know the footing of the course, the turns, the finish area and other little things that can happen during a race.”
