Golf tournament helps support AGAPE’s mission to help area residents

AGAPE hosted its sixth annual golf fundraising tournament Friday at the Warrenton Golf Course. There were 12 teams of four at the event, in addition to many sponsors.

AGAPE is a non-profit organization that serves over 3,000 families in Warren County. They strive to combat food insecurity in the area and prevent homelessness. The organization also supports families with financial needs by providing diapers, school supplies, Christmas assistance and more.

The event was overseen by AGAPE Executive Director Michelle Bernth. Bernth has been with the organization for almost 10 years and has spent her entire career in the nonprofit world.

She noted that events like these help people in Warren County who are facing hunger.

“In Warren County, about one in four people face food insecurity and our pantry feeds about 1,600 people every single month,” Bernth said. “It’s a big undertaking, but we have a really strong team of staff and volunteers that work really hard to make that happen.”

The event raised around $6,000 that will go towards helping people in the area.

“Every dollar that we raise is important and all of it adds up to be able to help make the mission possible,” Bernth said.

Bernth, along with the rest of the staff, were very grateful for their sponsors and the people who came to play golf for the day.

Companies that were sponsors were QCells, First State Community Bank, Main Street Real Estate, Gastorf Chevrolet, Schraer Heating and Cooling, Westbound Real Estate, Lewis-Blade and St. Charles Boat and Motor.

There were also 21 other companies that sponsored the event labeled as “hole sponsors.”

“We’re very grateful for all of our sponsors and to everybody who comes out to support this event,” Bernth said. “We want to make sure that everybody who supports our mission and the work that we do has an opportunity to plug in with the organization.”

The day started with a 10 a.m. shotgun time and teams participated in an 18 hole course scattered throughout the facility. Participants played for about four hours and then enjoyed a lunch afterwards catered from Casa Tequila.

There were also challenges and activities people could play to win prizes.

APAGE will be back again to host another fundraising event on Sept. 7. The event will be a Monte Carlo inspired gala at the Mary Lou Community Center.

“One of the things we try to do with our fundraising events is to have events that appeal to different crowds of people,” Bernth said.
