Warriors lose season opener

The Warrenton girls volleyball team did not get the outcome they wanted in their first game of the season, but Head Coach Kayla Nelson said it was the best they have ever played after watching them compete throughout the pre-season.

The Warriors lost three sets to Fort Zumwalt East. The first two sets, the team lost by a two-point differential and they fell in the third set 25-16.

Nelson noted that the team did a great job executing on the offensive side and generating those attacks, but she wants to see them improve in coverage and blocking.

She added that everyone on the team agreed after the game this was a weakness that they needed to work on.

“We implemented these things in practice yesterday and they were receptive to it and we’ll continue to work on it,” Nelson said.

After games, Nelson has the girls go around and say something they caught another teammate doing that represents their team culture.

Their team culture is “ACE,” which stands for attitude, communication and effort.

She noted that many comments she heard were specific examples about Nyasia Love and Izzy Lombardo remaining positive throughout the game and cheering loudly.

Another player pointed out how Maicey Miller is always smiling and some praised Erin Klasing for her communication skills.

“The season looks really good for us and there’s always going to be hiccups, but it’s about figuring out how to overcome that stuff in the moment,” Nelson said.
