Editor's Note: This interview was conducted prior to the Class 2 state golf meet.

Wright City freshman Morgan Nute is already making her mark on the golf course.

Nute recently placed first at the Class 2, District 1 golf meet in St. Louis. She shot a 76 and won the district by seven strokes.

She placed fourth at the Class 2 state golf meet in Joplin Oct. 16 and Oct. 17.

“I just want to have fun and just do the best I can and just be happy with how I did afterward,” Nute said prior to competing at the state meet. “Not really worrying about stressing out too much what I shoot because it's my first time. I just think it's a big accomplishment that I even got to state this year.”

Q: When did you start golfing?

“I started when I was like seven. I started going to the driving range and then I started playing in tournaments at eight.”

Q: How did you get involved in playing golf?

A: “My dad always golfed, like a long time when I was younger and he would take me to the driving range to watch. And then I just kind of sparked an interest and he just started teaching me how to play.”

Q: Was the competitive side of playing golf present throughout most of your time playing or did you pick that up later?

A: “Yeah, the competitive part was like mostly my entire time playing. I started playing tournaments when I was really young and just kept doing it every spring, fall and summer.”

Q: Is there a certain part of your game you see as like a strength?

A: “It's probably pretty balanced. I've always been pretty strong off the tee. Putted it pretty well. Sometimes you throw in three putts and things, but that just happens. And then my long game and everything and short game has improved as I've practiced more.”

Q: Was there any adjustment at going to the high school level and competing or, or was it kind of similar to other competitions you had done in the past?

A: “It's really similar just with the competition part of everything. High school is a lot different than what I was used to. But it's nice to change it up after you've been doing something for like, seven years. So it's just a cool, new thing for me.”

Q: Did you have any nerves or jitters before your first district golf competition or was it just another competition for you?

A: “I was definitely a little nervous for districts because it was like my first one. But, like, when I'm there it's like the same feeling I always have whenever I go golfing. Just the competitive side of things. So I was a little nervous but I was mostly just excited because it was my first time.”
