Davis named to Class 3 all-state third team as returner

Wright City senior Jeremiah Davis was the lone area football player to earn all-state honors.

Davis was named to the Class 3 football all-state third team as a returner. Davis returned two kickoffs for touchdowns on the season. Davis returned kickoffs of 89 yards and 95 yards for touchdowns in the first half of the season. Head Coach Tyler Rickard noted other teams avoided kicking to Davis later in the season. He did not get a kickoff return attempt after the second touchdown until the last game of the regular season.

“What makes Jeremiah so dangerous are his vision, speed and ability to break tackles,” Rickard said. “He sees the field very well and is able to set up blocks to get him an open hole and once that hole opens up, he’s gone. If someone is able to get a hit on him, chances are he’s going to bounce off the hit and keep going.”

Davis was also one of several senior team leaders this season that helped Wright City win five games after only winning one game the previous season. Rickard said Davis led the Wildcats mostly by his actions. Davis’ heart and work ethic gained the respect of everyone on the team.

“He leaves it all on the field every day and challenges others to do the same,” Rickard said. “He also isn’t afraid to speak up when needed either. And when Jeremiah speaks, everyone listens.”

Davis was also one of seven Wildcats to be named to the Class 3, District 3 team. Davis was also named to the district team as a returner. Duan McRoberts and Mason Wendt were named to the all-district team on the offensive side of the ball. McRoberts was named to the district team at running back. McRoberts rushed for over 1,101 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 games for the Wildcats. He averaged over eight yards per carry. Wendt was named to the district team as an offensive lineman.

Four Wildcats were named to the district team on the defensive side of the ball. Senior Roman Adaway was named to the Class 3, District 3 team as a defensive end. Adaway registered 63 total tackles, two sacks and recovered one fumble on the season. Carle’on Jones was named to the district team as a linebacker. Jones led the Wildcats with 81 total tackles on the season. Blake Hogan and Nate Womack were both named to the district team as defensive backs. Hogan registered an interception in the district semifinal game against St. Charles West. Womack registered 51 total tackles on the season. Womack intercepted a pass in the district opening game against Normandy Collaborative.

“To have so many guys recognized in the postseason is a big accomplishment for our program,” Rickard said. “The athletes that earned those awards were much deserved. They had great seasons. Those awards are also a reflection of our entire team. We had a very successful season and were able to take some big steps forward as a program, and I’m thrilled that we were recognized for that.”
