Wright City wrestlers earn fifth place finish

The Wright City Lady Wildcats used three second place finishes to place fifth as a team at the Ft. Zumwalt East Invite last week. 

Wright City earned 130 team points to place fifth at the tournament. Marquette won the tournament with 198 points. 

Caelyn Hanff, Elizabeth Riggs and Samantha Yates led the Lady Wildcats with second place finishes in their weight classes. 

Competing in the 110-pound weight class, Yates went 3-1 on the day to place second. She pinned Samara Serrano of Marshall in 36 seconds and Briana Ramirez of Granite City in 57 seconds to win her first two matches of the day. Yates pinned Addison Cupp of Festus in 3:28 to advance to the championship match. Yates fell to Jailyn Ebert of Ft. Zumwalt North in the championship match. Ebert pinned Yates at the 5:19 mark. 

After receiving a bye, Riggs won three of four competitive matches in the 125-pound weight class to finish in second place. Riggs pinned Lilly Kay of Hillsboro, Makayla Gordon of Pattonville and Ella Childress of Parkway West to advance to the championship match. Riggs fell to Lauren Mills of Festus 9-1 in the championship match. 

Hanff went 4-1 in the 170-pound weight class. Hanff pinned Riane Chmais of Parkway South, Kaitlynn Van De Wile of St. Clair, Aydan Squires of Oakville and Justice Sebree of St. Charles West to advance to the championship match. She pinned each opponent in under one minute. Hanff fell to Ali Haiser of Marquette 5-0 in the championship match. 

Kali Jensen placed third in the 120-pound weight class. She beat Raiden Jones-Wilson of Ft. Zumwalt South and Skyln Jones of Parkway South by fall in her first two matches of the day. After falling to Cassidy Benwell of North Point in the semifinals, Jensen pinned Alyssa Anderson of North Point in 1:26 in the third place match. 

Sadie Sehnert went 2-2 in competitive matches to place fourth in the 130-pound weight class. Sehnert pinned Sara Keebler of Eureka and Ava Wood in her first two matches of the day. 

Ella Greenwell Washburn went 3-2 on the day to place seventh in the 235-pound weight class. Greenwell Washburn beat Armijah Fraziere of Lift for Life Academy, Jada Holland of Pattonville and Isabelle Winingear of Holt. 

Wright City is slated to compete at the Marshall Tournament Jan. 7.
