Wright City unable to cash in from charity stripe in home loss

Wright City was unable to convert trips to the free throw line to points in their home loss to Northwest Thursday night.

Wright City (6-11) fell to Northwest 47-39 Thursday night. The Lady Wildcats led 36-31 after three quarters but were outscored 16-3 in the fourth quarter. Wright City shot 3-12 from the free throw line in the final quarter.

“Part of learning to be successful is learning to close games,” Wright City Head Coach Doug Smith said. “I am thankful we were in a game that required some pressure shots and free throws. I wish we would have made more of them, but you can’t learn to handle those situations unless you are in them.

Smith saw positives from the Wright City defense, which he characterized as “excellent all night.” He added they also thought they had opportunities to extend their lead early in the game.

“On a couple of occasions, we had a lead and a chance to really open the lead up but just couldn’t hit the big shot or make the big play,” Smith said. “I’m really proud of the defensive effort though. Good intensity. Created numerous turnovers. Paige (Rees) and Zoe (Mitchell) did really nice jobs limiting their two biggest offensive threats.”

After falling behind 4-2 in the opening quarter, Wright City outscored Northwest 10-4 in the rest of the quarter to take a 12-8 lead. Shiriah McRoberts hit a three point field goal in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 19-18 lead into halftime. McRoberts scored five consecutive points in the third quarter to give Wright City a 30-25 lead. The Lady Wildcats led by five points heading into the final quarter.

Shiriah McRoberts led Wright City with 14 points. Danika Graham added 11 points for the Lady Wildcats.

One day earlier, Wright City earned a 67-55 road win over Brentwood. Smith said the Lady Wildcats shot the ball well in the win.

“Our offensive pace that night was terrific and shots just fell most of the night,” Smith said. “Shiriah did a terrific job all night pushing tempo. Danika had an outstanding offensive game and Olivia Wilson really made a different with her aggressiveness in the paint on offense.”
