Wright City struggles to solve press in loss

Wright City was unable to overcome an early deficit in their loss to Orchard Farm Monday night.

Wright City (8-17) fell to Orchard Farm (19-8) 64-33 in the Class 4, District 7 quarterfinal. Wright City struggled to handle Orchard Farm’s press during the game. Orchard Farm utilized a pressure defense both after made and missed shots.

“We struggled with it,” Wright City girls basketball coach Dustin Elledge said. “Most of the night we struggled handling their pressure. We showed flashes of good things but then kind of got in our own way trying to go too fast.”

Wright City senior Jasmin Simpson kept Wright City in the game in the first half. She scored Wright City’s first 17 points. Wright City outscored Orchard Farm 11-8 after falling behind 13-4 to pull within six points in the second quarter.

“She’s a playmaker doing her thing,” Elledge said. “I tell the girls one girl can only do so much. Everything she did, just Jasmin being Jasmin and being a playmaker.”

After the Lady Wildcats struggled early, Elledge saw Wright City’s intensity improve late in the first quarter and in the second quarter. However, he thought the Lady Wildcats got complacent and flat-footed in the second half. They struggled to get their intensity back up to the level it was in the first half.

Orchard Farm outscored Wright City 14-6 to end the second quarter to lead 35-21 at halftime. They outscored the Lady Wildcats 21-4 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Elledge noted the positive strides the Lady Wildcats took over the course of the season. They equaled their win total from last season and started the season with five straight wins.

“We definitely have a lot of positives,” Elledge said. “I just got done telling all the girls that all of us made tremendous progress from day one to now. We’ve still got a long ways to go definitely. But over the course of the season, we definitely made a lot of progress.”
