Wright City seeks voter support to improve roads

Posted

Wright City voters will have the opportunity to approve a $9 million no-tax increase bond measure that will help fund improvements to city roads.

City officials are encouraging residents to support the ballot measure, known as Proposition R, which will be decided in next Tuesday’s election. If approved, the city will be able to take out general obligation bonds to improve city roads. One road in particular that would be improved immediately is Roelker Road, which runs along the new high school that is currently under construction and is slated to open in January 2025.

According to Mayor Michelle Heiliger, if voters approve the no-tax increase bond, the city would be able to borrow the money at lower interest rates, saving the city money in the long run.

This is the best option that we have right now to make sure the road does get repaired,” said City Clerk Abbie Ogborn.

In addition to other roads that need repair, issues with Roelker Road involve resolving safety issues, as projected repairs and upgrades include adding a turning lane to help with traffic flow.

If voters do not pass Proposition R, the city will still have to borrow the money which will have a higher interest rate and will take longer to pay back, according to Heiliger.

The approach to this loan is possible because of the 1 percent sales tax increase voters approved last April, according to Alderman Ramiz Hakim. He encourages the public to help save the city money and make renovations without raising taxes.
