Wright City places third at St. Charles

The Wright City Lady Wildcats used five top-three finishes to place third as a team at the St. Charles Invite last week. 

Wright City senior Elizabeth Riggs was the lone Wright City wrestler to win her weight class  during the competition. Competing in the 125-pound weight class, Riggs won all three of her matches. After winning her first two matches by fall, Riggs beat Katelyn Guth or Francis Howell Central on a 6-2 decision to win her weight class. 

Ella Greenwell and Sadie Sehnert both earned second place finishes in their respective weight classes. Sehnert won her first three matches to advance to the championship match in the 130-pound weight class. Sehnert won each of her first three matches by fall to advance to the championship match. Sehnert fell to Francis Howell Central wrestler Nevaeh Smith in the championship match. 

Greenwell won a pair of matches to place second in the 235-pound weight class. She beat Makayla Kirchner of McCluer North and Persephone Morrison and Hazelwood East by fall to advance to the championship match. She fell to Isabella Winnegear of Holt in the championship match. 

Kali Jensen and Samantha Yates also only lost one match and placed third in their weight class. Jensen placed third in the 115-pound weight class. Jensen bounced back from a loss in the semifinals to win her final two matches of the day. She pinned Madeline Summers of Ladue Horton Watkins in 18 seconds in the consolation semifinals. She pinned Olivia Weaver of Fulton in the third place match. 

Yates also bounced back from an early loss to place third in the 110-pound weight class. 

After dropping a close 6-5 decision to Ma’Kayla Bonner of Granite City in the quarterfinals, Yates won her final four matches by fall to place third. She pinned Dakota Ivancic of North Point in 2:15 in the third place match. 

Liliana Wiedemeier also won multiple matches for the Lady Warriors. Wiedemeier won three matches. She placed fifth in the 120-pound weight class. 

Wright City finished the competition with 133 team points. 

Rice places fifth 

Wright City wrestler Quincy Rice won three matches to take home a fifth place finish at the St. Charles Invite last weekend. 

Rice went 3-2 in five matches to place fifth in the 215-pound weight class. Rice earned all three of his wins by fall. He pinned Jace Thompson of Pattonville in 1:58 in the fifth place match. 

Joseph Beitel and Cody Cushing each won a match at the tournament. Beitel earned a win by fall against Orchard Farm wrestler Aaron Hurley in his opening match. Cushing beat Andre Gillespie of McCluer North by fall in his first consolation match. 

Both teams are slated to wrestle at Warrenton Jan. 18.
