The Wright City government has sold the last piece of the lot that once belonged to the well-known Big Boy’s restaurant.
Wright City’s Board of Aldermen on May 28 unanimously approved selling a half-acre lot on the west side of the former Big Boy’s property, located on Veterans Memorial Parkway. Buyer Westplex Auto Group paid the city $65,000, according to a sale contract provided by the city.
The auto company plans to renovate a small building on the property to sell and rent vehicles, according to a permit application submitted to the city. Westplex Auto Group’s purchase of the property was conditioned on the city’s approval of the permit, which aldermen provided at the same May 28 meeting.
As part of the purchasing contract, Wright City has also agreed to waive any future fees for permits or inspections required to approve the commercial site for occupancy.
Wright City has owned the lot since 2011, when it purchased the former Big Boy’s property, 2.5 acres in all, for $170,000. Big Boy’s, once a famous attraction in the St. Louis region, shut down in 2005 after the owners failed to pay almost $30,000 in state sales taxes.
After purchasing the property, Wright City eventually paid to demolish the deteriorating Big Boy’s building.
In 2017, the city sold 2 acres of the property for $200,000 to Osage County Guns, which is now operating its business at the site. The city kept the last half-acre with the intent to eventually sell or develop the lot.
