The Wright City football team is now on a two-game winning streak after defeating Mark Twain 34-20 in a tightly contested game on Sept. 27. The Wildcats improve to 3-2 record, which is the first time they have had a winning record so far this season.

The game went back and forth, with the score tied 14-14 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Wildcats were able to break through with two more touchdowns and then further cement their lead in the fourth quarter
with six more points.

“They made things tough for us offensively. We had to make a couple different adjustments throughout the game to find success, but our kids did a good job of making those adjustments and allowing us to start to succeed offensively and defensively,” Head Coach Tyler Rickard said.

Throughout the game, Wright City made small tweaks to their blocking schemes with their fullback and offensive linemen.

“It’s always tough to make those in-game adjustments, because we’re changing the way that we’ve done things that week leading up,” Rickard said. “Our kids did a good job of taking that and running with it.”

In addition to making some changes within their plays, Wright City also discussed eliminating penalties throughout the game due to the amount of yardage they were losing.

However, once the momentum stopped shifting between both teams, the Wildcats started to click and limited Mark Twain to only one touchdown in the second half which led to Wright City gaining a 14-point lead.

Rickard noted there was some frustration throughout the game due to self-inflicted penalties, but the team did not allow it to take them out of the game mentally.

“We ultimately knew that we could do this. We got to reset and go out there and execute on the next drive,” Rickard said. “I was proud of their mental toughness throughout the game, because it was very back and forth. In those
games, you always worry, are we going to be able to withstand those waves.”

Overall, Duan McRoberts led the offense with four touchdowns and a career high of 312 yards on 33 rushes. Kayden Allison had one 49-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter that solidified the Wildcats’ win.

Dayton Humphreys threw for 54 yards. Allison had one carry for 11 yards and had 74 receiving yards. Xavier Stufflebean added 11 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side, Terrence Love had one interception and four tackles. Gavin McCord recorded 11 tackles, Stufflebean had nine and Hakeem Dowdy had eight.

This Thursday, the Wildcats will take on Veritas Christian at home at 7 p.m. It has been nine years since the last time the two teams met each other at the varsity level.
