Wright City board hears report form public works director on upcoming road improvements

Posted

Kyle Roettger with Wright City Public Works outlined some upcoming road repairs and improvements that his department looks to complete in the coming weeks at the Wright City board’s July 11 meeting.

Road repairs and troublesome road conditions have been a focus of discussion at several recent Wright City board meetings, especially with the recent passage of a $9 million bond issue to fund road improvements.

While the majority of those funds are pledged to widen and improve Roelker Road as the new Wright City High School is being constructed, it is possible that some leftover funds will be directed to cover additional projects.

Those funds are not yet being used, however, there is still plenty of work to be done maintaining the city’s road network and Roettger outlined some of the upcoming repairs and improvements that are going to be made to several vital thoroughfares in the city limits.

Roettger said that the public works department recently completed repairs on roads in the Forest Lake subdivision, sealing cracks that had begun to appear in the roadway. Other planned improvements included several locations on Westwoods Road and Wildcat Drive where pavement will need to be replaced or repaired.

There are also improvements being made to Fredericksburg Way.

Alderman Ramiz Hakim was careful to ask where specifically some of the changes were being made on Westwoods and Wildcat.

“There’s one spot where the base is failing pretty bad, and it’s got a pretty substantial amount of buckling there,” Roettger said. “It’s maybe 500 feet to the south of where Westwoods and WIldcat meet.”

He continued saying that the repairs would cover a roughly 160 foot stretch of the roadway.

Residents will also recognize some of the locations where Westwoods will be receiving improvements to what Roettger described as “tire-catchers,” where the base of the road is failing and the road surface has settled.

Hakim also questioned Roettger on some of the public works department’s upcoming projects which were outlined in his report. One of the improvements is to the ditch line in front of the strip mall on Wildcat Drive.

Roettger said that the project was on his to-do list; however, it would be completed in between the other asphalt work they have planned for the summer.

Hakim also inquired about Weatherby Drive, which intersects with Westwoods east of Wildcat Drive. He wanted to know if there were any improvements scheduled for that roadway’s entrance onto Westwoods along with the repairs on Westwoods.

Roettger said that while there were no plans to improve that entryway under the current repairs to Westwoods, it was on the list of upcoming concrete projects. He said he was hesitant to make changes to that area until other ongoing projects in that area were finalized.

“It’s not part of the fix, it’s on our concrete repairs list. It’s kind of been on hold just because I wanted to know where the city was at with the new park coming in and the apartments,” Roettger said.
