Wright City will have new faces teaming up with veterans

The Wright City Lady Wildcats will count on both returning golfers and newcomers on the golf course this season.

Wright City features a mix of returning golfers and newcomers this season. Head Coach Shannon Wells said the Lady Wildcats have two freshman golfers who he thinks can fill the gap left due to a pair of varsity golfers graduating last spring.

“One moved in and then one came up through the school…And I think they might be able to fill that gap for us on the varsity,” Wells said.

One of the incoming freshmen, Morgan Nute, has been golfing since she was seven years old. She had positive impressions of the Wright City golf team as they prepare for the start of the season.

“I’ve played since I was seven years old so I’m just kind of comfortable with it.” Nute said. “Just the sport in general and Wells makes it very inviting. The whole team is inviting. It’s nice.”

Wells said he is “expecting big things” out of Nute this season.

Kailin Hawn is one of Wright City’s returning golfers this season. Hawn is in her third season golfing for Wright City. She hopes she will shoot better scores for the upcoming season. She also hopes for successful seasons for the new golfers.

“I hope to see the new girls have some success and feel confident in what they’re doing,” Hawn said.

Wells said the Lady Wildcats focused on multiple aspects of their golf game through the first several practices. They work on putting and chipping every day because Wells believes a good short game can take strokes off of a golfer’s score. They also spent time on the range and on the course.

“We've been on the course I think three or four times,” Wells said. “We played nine, a full nine twice. And so the girls have been, they get better every time they go on the course and that's the best thing for them actually.”

Much like other fall sports, Wright City had to deal with extreme heat this week. This forced practice to be held inside. They went over rules during Monday’s practice. Wells said it could negatively impact the Lady Wildcats if they are not able to swing their clubs much before their first meet Friday.

“Those that have played a lot though, it won't hurt them as bad,” Wells said. “Like it really hurts the people who haven't played as much, I think is really kind of where that comes down to.”

Wright City is slated to compete at 7:30 a.m. Friday in Boonville.
