Warrior grapplers place fourth at Liberty Invite

Jacob Ruff’s title in the the 190-pound weight class and a pair of second place finishes helped the Warrenton Warriors register another top-five team tournament finish.

The Warrenton boys wrestling team placed fourth at the Liberty Invitational in Wentzville. They finished with 125 team points. 

Ruff went undefeated in five matches to win the 190-pound weight class. He won his first four matches of the day by fall to earn a spot in the championship match. He beat Kane Strehl of Sullivan in the quarterfinals and Aidan Haglund of Fulton in the semifinals. He pinned Strehl in 1:08 and Haglund in 1:11. Ruff beat Ian Tuggle of Centralia on a 5-2 decision in the championship match. 

Emanuel McCauley and Jeremiah Kassing both registered second place finishes for the Warriors in their respective weight classes. McCauley placed second in the 106-pound weight class. McCauley pinned Austin Springer of Kirksville and Chase Gray of Francis Howell Central to advance to the semifinals. McCauley pinned Aaron Watson of St. Charles West in 3:39 to advance to the championship match. McCauley fell to Bryson Dubes of Centralia on a 5-2 decision in the championship match. 

Jeremiah Kassing went 3-1 on the day, with his only loss coming in the championship match. Kassing registered pins against Dylan Myers of Francis Howell Central, Oliver Borton of Sullivan and Cooper Mortensen of Ladue Horton Watkins to advance to the championship match. Austyn Hunter of Kirksville pinned Kassing in 3:29 in the 120-pound championship match. 

Teammate Joshua Kassing placed third in the 120-pound weight class. Kassing went 4-1 on the day to earn a spot in the third place match. After losing to Hunter on an 8-3 decision, Kassing won three straight matches against Tevion Jackson of Ritenour, Jackie Diekman of Holt and Cameron Cummins of Fulton. Kassing beat Mortensen on an 8-3 decision in the third place match. 

Noah Lohrmann, Levi Penrod and Anthony Lombardo all won multiple matches and placed fourth in their weight classes. Lohrmann won his first three matches in the 126-pound weight class before falling in the semifinal and third place matches. Lohrmann pinned Ethan Kirt of St. Charles West in 1:06 and Grisham Ravindranath of Ladue Horton Watkins in 1:41 in his first two matches of the day. He pinned Sam Hecht of Sullivan in 1:28 in the quarterfinals. Lohrmann fell to Weston Ward of Centralia on a 7-3 decision in the semifinals. Logan Pennock of Fort Madison pinned Lohrmann in 4:28 in the third place match. 

Penrod went 2-2 in the 150-pound weight class. After falling to Henry Wiseman of Fort Madison on a 5-3 decision in his opening match, Penrod won his next two matches to compete for third place. Penrod pinned both Dirk Rivera of Ft. Zumwalt East and Kaden Barnes of Fulton in 4:38. Boston Howard of Holt pinned Penrod in 3:40 in the third place match.

Lombardo split his opening round matches in the 165-pound weight class. Lombardo beat Wieland Schmuke of Sullivan on an 18-5 major decision. He lost to Peyton Shaver of Festus on a 5-0 decision. Lombardo beat Elijah Brocksmith of Fulton on a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals before falling to Trenton Williams of Liberty on a 12-6 decision in the semifinals. Lombardo fell 4-2 in a rematch with Shaver in the third place match. 

Emily Beumel and Madisen Nash both competed at the varsity level at the Liberty Invite for the Lady Warriors. Beumel responded from a quarterfinal loss and won three consecutive matches to earn a fifth place finish in the 140-pound weight class. After Beumel pinned Addilynn Caimi of Ft. Zumwalt South in 33 seconds in the first round, she was pinned by Josie Begeman of Fulton in 1:28 in the quarterfinals. Beumel pinned Summer Gollaher of Palmyra, Julian Smith of Ritenour and Josephine Crowley of Lindbergh to place fifth in the weight class. She pinned all three opponents in a combined 1:15. 

Nash placed seventh in the 145-pound weight class. She registered wins by fall against Samantha Mokwa of Pattonville and Kaliyah Broner of St. Charles West. She pinned both opponents in over three minutes. Nash won the seventh place match by forfeit. 

The Warrenton boys wrestling team is scheduled to compete at the Harrisonville Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Lady Warriors’ next scheduled competition is a dual at Washington Jan. 4.
