The Warrenton Lady Warriors used strong first and third quarters en route to a 33-point home conference win Tuesday night.
Warrenton (3-3) beat conference foe North Point 68-35 to move to 2-0 in conference play. The Warriors used strong starts to both halves to take control of the game in the win. Warrenton outscored North Point by a combined 25 points in the first and third quarters.
“Tonight was extra special because it was our first home win. That was exciting,” Warrenton girls basketball coach Hannah Logan said.
Warrenton got off to an early 11-point lead over North Point. After the game was tied at two, Warrenton went on a 13-2 run to take an early 15-4 lead. Warrenton converted seven of their first nine points from the free throw stripe. Four different Warriors scored the team’s first 15 points.
After Warrenton and North Point played an even second quarter that led to a 38-25 halftime advantage for the Lady Warriors, Warrenton started the third quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 22-point lead. Zoe Klaus and Isabel Benke each scored five points to start the quarter. Audrey Payne hit a three-pointer to give Warrenton a 51-29 lead.
“Second quarter, I thought we weren’t hustling enough. We were way laid back,” Logan said. “So our halftime speech was we’re coming out. We’re winning every rebound. We’re winning every loose ball. We’re going to get up in them. We’re going to win the quarter. And we did.”
Warrenton was aided by a balanced attack in Tuesday night’s win. Four Lady Warriors reached double figures in points by the end of the third quarter. Klaus led Warrenton with 18 points. Payne scored 15 points, while Benke scored 14 points for the Lady Warriors. Sophi Mueller scored 10 points for Warrenton.
“One of our goals tonight was win as a team, play as a team,” Logan said. “That was our big focus is we’re going to win and we’re going to play as a team.”
Warrenton beat St. Charles 56-41 last week in their conference opener. The Lady Warriors are slated to compete at the Mineral Area Shootout Saturday against Park Hills Central.
