Truesdale man sentenced for role in 2022 carjacking in Springfield

Posted

A 50-year-old Truesdale man was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for his role in a Springfield carjacking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri.

Michael Brian Free received the sentence in early July. He had pleaded guilty in February to one count of taking a motor vehicle by force, violence and intimidation with the intent to cause death and serious bodily harm.

The carjacking occurred April 30, 2022. Free admitted he pointed a knife at a woman who was getting gas at a Springfield convenience store. Free approached the woman, demanded the keys to her 2011 Chevy Impala, and threatened to stab her in the neck if she refused.

The victim surrendered her car keys and then called police from the store. Police used video footage and the store’s financial records to identify Free, who was then apprehended while driving the stolen vehicle in the Des Moines, Iowa, area in May 2022.
