Truesdale chili cook-off brings out 14 tasty homemade chili recipes

Posted

Fourteen different types of chili helped warm up the Truesdale Community Christmas event on Dec. 2 at the MaryLou Center, but only one could be deemed the best.

And that title belonged to Paul Hall, both the grand champion and people’s choice award winner at this year’s chili cook off.

Hall said his award-winning chili includes “a little bit of this and a little bit of that,” but was coy as to the actual recipe. That was probably a smart choice, given this isn’t the first chili cook off he’s received a trophy for. This was his second championship, he said. He also has two second place finishes in other cookoff events, and a fourth place finish, “but I don’t count that,” he said.

“I’ve been making chili for a long time,” he said. “Right around 35 years.”

He was happy to have earned the judge’s approval, but said that he was honored to be the choice of the average chili enthusiast.

“I like people to enjoy what I cook,” he said. “I love to cook.”

He was also complimentary of the other chili entered in the Truesdale contest.

“It was all pretty good,” he said.

And there were plenty of good ones to choose from, judge and Mayor Jerry Cannon said.

“There were so many excellent chilis, it was a difficult decision,” Cannon said. “I kept tasting several multiple times to come to a consensus with Olivia and Bert. In the end, we were pretty much in agreement on the top three.”

Cannon was joined in the judging booth by Bert Michaelson and Olivia Clancy.

The three chose Hall as the first-place winner, Krystal Killian as the second-place winner and April Sansoucie as the third-place winner. Killian also received the prize for having the best decorated table.

Money from the chili cook-off goes toward the city’s Shop with a Cop program.
