Tribute to Veterans Memorial group launches paver fundraiser

The Tribute to Veterans committee is launching a new fundraiser program to help plans progress for a memorial to be displayed in Warrenton.The group is selling paver bricks that will be part of a “Walk of Honor” that will encircle the proposed memorial.The organization plans to sell 1,500 by the middle of the summer, with hopes the first phase of the project will begin in the fall.“I am very anxious to break ground,” said Wendell Webb, a committee member who updated the Warren County Commission on the project Tuesday. “I think it will open to the community that we are serious about it.”The veterans memorial will honor local veterans who were either killed in action, missing in action or prisoners of war. It will be built near the corner of Highway 47 and Mockingbird Lane in Warrenton, on county-owned property next to the administration building.The project is a joint effort of veterans organization throughout the county.The pavers can be purchased by individuals, families, businesses or other organizations. A brick will cost $150.Buyers can have up to three lines with a maximum of 20 spaces per line. Two different colors can be purchased: Beldon Nutmeg or Beldon Wheatfield.Applications are currently available at the following locations at businesses in Warrenton, Wright City, Marthasville and Jonesburg. An order also can be placed online at tributetoveteransmemorial.org.The design of the proposed memorial was altered recently. The memorial will still feature a a stone wall with the words “Some Gave All” etched on the front, with the names of deceased soldiers on the other side. Flags representing each branch of the military will be on the outer perimeter of the monument.The memorial also will include three bronze statues — a mother and child standing beside a battlefield cross. A reflecting pool and stone waterfall has been removed from the initial design.Commissioners said they are eager for the project to begin taking shape.“I think it is a great thing,” Presiding Commissioner Roger Mauzy said. “I think you will get a lot of good cooperation.”Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation can mail a payment to Tribute to veterans Memorial at P.O.
