Three Lady Wildcats earn top-three finishes

Three top-three finishes helped the Wright City Lady Wildcats earn a 12th place team finish at the Liberty Invitational last week. 

Wright City, who is currently ranked ninth in the Class 1 girls wrestling rankings, was led by Caelyn Hanff’s second place finish and third place finishes by Kali Jensen and Elizabeth Riggs. Hanff won her first three matches of the day by pin to advance to the first place match. She beat Addyson Shepherd of Ft. Zumwalt East, Paiten Gastreoch-Hurst of Lafayette and Madisynn Crawford of Kirksville. Hanff fell to August Rottmann of Highland on a 7-2 decision in the championship match. 

Jensen and Riggs both went 3-1 on the day to earn third place finishes. Jensen placed third in the 115-pound weight class. Jensen pinned Trinity Greenwood of Ft. Zumwalt East and Tyne Melnick of Kirksville in her first two matches of the day. Jensen responded after falling to Kailey Benson of Francis Howell Central to beat Natalie Ford of Lindbergh in the third place match. Jensen pinned Ford in less than one minute. 

Competing in the 120-pound weight class, Riggs pinned Johanna Watkins of Holt and Anna Ragar of Palmyra in her first two matches of the day. Riggs fell to Stevie Lupo of Francis Howell Central on a 13-10 decision. She beat Emmy Begemann of Fulton in the third place match. Riggs pinned Begemann in 1:21. 

Sadie Sehnert and Ella Greenwell Washburn also won matches for the Lady Wildcats. 

David Riggs led the Wright City boys wrestling team with a fourth place finish at the Liberty Invite. Competing in the 138-pound weight class, Riggs started the day 2-1 to advance to the championship bracket. Riggs pinned Brandon Richard of St. Charles West in 1:01 and Logan Ellick of Ladue Horton Watkins in 0:31 in his first two matches of the day. Riggs was pinned by Lane Patterson of Kirksville in the opening round. Riggs fell to Rex Bryson of Centralia and Lane Patterson of Kirksville to place fourth in the weight class. 

Isaiah Yoder also won a competitive match for the Wildcats. He placed eighth in the 175-pound weight class. He pinned David Luebbers of Pattonville in 2:44 in his second match of the day. Yoder dropped a pair of matches before losing his final two matches of the day after needing to medically forfeit. 

The Wright City girls wrestling team is scheduled to compete at the Ft. Zumwalt East Tournament Friday. The boys wrestling team is slated to compete at the Brentwood Tournament Saturday.
