Wildcats compete in scrimmage against Grizzlies

The Wright City coaching staff had another evaluation opportunity last week during the Wildcats’ scrimmage against North Point High School.

For the second year, Wright City traveled to Wentzville to compete in a 7-on-7 and Big Man Challenge at North Point High School. Wright City Head Football Coach Tyler Rickard said their summer camps and last week’s July 12 scrimmage allowed the coaching staff to get good evaluations on personnel and schemes. The evaluations from the scrimmage helped the Wildcats know what to focus on during their three day camp earlier this week.

“We also want to make it a fun, competitive environment,” Rickard said. “I think that’s what we saw a lot today was whether we won each rep, it was bouncing back the next rep and kind of in this relatively low stress environment, we want to see how people respond and we want guys to get better each and every rep and I think we did that today.”

Rickard thought the Wright City passing game did some good things in the 7-on-7 competition against the Grizzlies. There were some concepts they did and tags they added that worked really well. They put those in towards the end of June and worked on them last week. Defensively, Rickard thought they did some good things but also had some issues in coverage. Rickard noted Wright City will be starting two new cornerbacks this season.

“It’s a good learning experience,” Rickard said. “It can be a bit of a steep curve. North Point’s a good football team and so they gave us a lot of challenges. But we got better today. That’s what I wanted.”

The Wildcats still have some starting spots open as they look towards the start of the season in August. They tried certain players in different positions at the scrimmage last week to see if those players will be good fits at those positions.

“There’s still some things that are up in the air that we will continue to sort through until we get to week one,” Rickard said.

Wright City completed their high school football camp July 19. They will begin fall practice in early August.
