Wright City's Riggs places first at Brentwood Invite

David Riggs’ first place finish led Wright City to a top-10 team finish at the Brentwood Invitational last weekend. 

Riggs went 5-0 on the day to place first in the 144-pound weight class. Riggs pinned Evan Saunders of Hancock and Joseph Kister of Oakville to win his first two matches of the day. He beat Ethan Floyd of Maplewood-Richmond Heights 16-0 and Keaton Reeves of Herculaneum 16-2 in the first two matches of the championship group pool play. Riggs pinned Dionte Henderson of Gateway Science Academy Charter in 52 seconds to finish the day undefeated and win the weight class. 

David Yates and Lane Graves also registered top-three finishes at the Brentwood Invite. Yates went 4-1 in the 113-pound weight class to place second for the Wildcats. Yates went 2-1 in the opening round of matches to advance to the championship bracket. Yates pinned Abel Curdt of Brentwood in 1:47 and Andrew Rushing of Oakville in 17 seconds in the opening round. He fell to Tharon Harper of Central on a 13-10 decision. Yates pinned Liam Callahan of St. Francis Borgia and Murllin Bender of Gateway Science Academy Charter in under one minute each to place second in the weight class. 

Graves went 3-2 to place third in the 138-pound weight class. Graves pinned Aden Norman of Normandy Collaborative and Zykhi Barnes of Normandy junior varsity for two of his wins. He also beat Haider Waheed of Hancock 17-2. 

Caleb Hall won his last three matches to place fifth in the 190-pound weight class. After dropping his first two matches by fall, Hall won his final three matches of the day. Hall pinned Will Clarkson of St. Francis Borgia in 2:21 in the opening round of matches. He pinned Mekhi Green of Normandy in 2:40 and teammate Quincy Rice in 2:41 to earn fifth at the tournament. 

Wright City placed 10th as a team, finishing with 163 points. They finished 1.5 points behind Normandy for ninth place. 

Wright City is slated to compete at the Marshall Tournament Jan. 7.
