Warren County R-III School District paraprofessionals will receive a monthly stipend for the remainder of the school year.
The Warren County R-III school board last week unanimously approved the paraprofessional stipend as presented starting in December. The district will pay $255 per month to paraprofessionals starting in December and running through June.
The approval came one month after the board approved the district spending $100,000 to pay stipends to the paraprofessionals.
“We talked to our teams about what we need to do to make that happen,” Warren County R-III Superintendent Gregg Klinginsmith said. “We do have to have a motion that has a start date on that. So we’d like to start that at the December paycheck.”
Klinginsmith confirmed the district reached out to the paraprofessionals in the district, who confirmed they preferred to be paid monthly instead of in one lump sum.
The decision to allocate $100,000 for paraprofessionals last month came after the board considered a recommendation from Klinginsmith to raise paraprofessional pay from $12 an hour to $14 an hour. Klinginsmith made the recommendation due to struggles the district was having filling paraprofessional positions. The district currently has 13 paraprofessional vacancies.
Multiple board members last month were concerned about approving wage increases outside of the district’s usual negotiation process. Klinginsmith conceded he had this concern when making the recommendation last month.
The district had $100,000 available in the budget from funds not spent because of the paraprofessional vacancies throughout the year.
