R-III approves slight staff reduction

The Warren County R-III School Board has approved a plan to slightly reduce district staffing for the 2023-2024 school year.

The plan calls for the district to reduce district funded teachers from 184 in the current school year to 182 next school year. Earlier this year, the district had actually gone up by one teacher because it was having trouble filling paraprofessional positions. The addition of a teacher was used in place of three vacant paraprofessional positions.

“At Daniel Boone, they were short paras and we hired one teacher for three para spots,” Warren County R-III Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith said. “We’re going back to having the para positions, being hopeful that we can fill those positions for next year.”

For the upcoming school year, the district will decrease the number of kindergarten and first grade teachers from three to two. The district is planning to add a middle school special education teacher.

“That needs a little support,” Klinginsmith said. “We’d take one of those teachers and move that up to the middle school to have a total reduction of really one position, because we (previously) combined the three.”

The district is once again planning to hire 49 paraprofessionals in the 2023-2024 school year.
