Marthasville Board continues to discuss road and water line projects at May meeting

The Marthasville Board of Aldermen continued their discussion of the city’s ongoing water line projects at their May meeting.

Mayor David Lange was pleased to report that the city had received their final inspection from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and they had passed.

“The water lines are pretty much intact now. They should be working, everybody’s hooked up and running,” Lange said.

Marthasville has been in the process of upgrading their water lines, as a part of that process they were ordered to begin treating their water with chlorine by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The next steps will include a series of tests that the city will conduct on the new and improved water infrastructure. Those tests include a fire flow test and a static pressure test on all of the city’s fire hydrants to ensure they are still working properly.

The board also had a robust discussion about the designs they were going to request from Cochran Engineering for the changes that would be made to E. South Street. According to Lange, the engineering firm was waiting for instruction on what designs the board wanted to review for the street improvements.

Alderman Chris DeVore wanted to see an option for the street that included perpendicular parking as opposed to the current parallel parking that occurs. Lange said that Cochran had told him that was outside the “scope of work” they were contracted for by the city.

Regardless, Lange suggested that they move forward with a request for plans to widen the street enough to safely parallel park on both sides of the street. He felt that even if aldermen wanted to make changes to the parking on the road later, they would rather have the space even if they decide to limit parking to one side of the street.

Alderman Nick Lange had previously brought up concerns that keeping the parking on both sides of the street would block the view of the City Park Pavilion from the street. Alderman Lange was not present at the meeting and the remaining aldermen were unconvinced.

“If you’re down there for an event, people are gonna appreciate the spots more than a car being parked there blocking the view,” DeVore said.

They then decided to move forward with requesting the design with space for parallel parking on both sides of the street, agreeing that if they decided to prohibit parking on one side they could make that decision later.

Later in the meeting the aldermen also approved a liquor license for vendors at the upcoming Marthasville Truck and Tractor pull on July 13.

They also approved an annexation of a nearby property in the city. The property includes the All Encompassing Education building. School officials had requested that the city annex the property and the board held a public hearing on the matter at their previous meeting where there were no objections.
