Man charged for assault, kidnapping

Authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of a man who was investigated in August for assaulting a woman and holding her against her will.

Charges were issued Nov. 14 against Charles E. Butler Jr., 52, for second-degree kidnapping and second-degree domestic assault, both of which are class D felonies. According to a document from the Warren County Sheriff’s department, Butler was identified as the assailant on Aug. 27 after emergency responders worked together to track down the source of a distressed 911 call.

A call came to the 911 dispatch center just before 4 p.m. that day, but no one spoke to the dispatcher. Instead, the dispatcher reported hearing the sounds of a woman crying while a man threatened to kill her, according to the sheriff’s department. The 911 call also recorded the sounds of the woman being dragged and punched, and pleading for her assailant to stop, deputies allege.

The 911 dispatch center tracked the location of the call to a storage yard on the North Service Road west of Wright City. A sheriff’s deputy went to the facility and located  the victim, who he was able to approach and was visibly injured, according to the deputy’s report. The woman reportedly had dried blood on her lip and marks on her neck from being choked.

The deputy located Butler, the suspect, inside a storage unit, reportedly yelling and throwing items.

According to the sheriff’s department, the victim explained that she was with Butler as they went to Elsberry, Wright City, and St. Charles County, and Butler was becoming agitated with her. She alleged that Butler was hitting her as she drove to St. Charles County, so she stopped the car and got out. She alleged that Butler then shoved her into the back seat of the vehicle and began driving toward the storage facility in Wright City.

While in the back seat, the woman said she armed herself with a large knife and tried to signal to other drivers for help as Butler allegedly threatened to “bury her,” according to the sheriff’s department report.

When they arrived at the storage facility and Butler got out to open the gate, the woman said she took the opportunity to grab her cell phone, call 911, and then hide the phone in her purse, allowing rescuers to locate her. Afterward, Butler allegedly wrestled the knife from the woman and then prevented her from running away by choking her, according to the sheriff’s department.

Butler had not been served with the warrant for his arrest as of Nov. 22, according to online court records. The warrant requires him to be held in jail without bond once he is taken into custody.
