Two Warrenton girls basketball players received accolades from the team’s performance at the Washington Tournament earlier this year.
The Lady Warriors won three consecutive games to win the Washington Tournament. They defeated Holt, Parkway West and Ursuline all by double digits. Senior Garneisha Love was named KLPW Radio Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Junior Audrey Payne was also recognized and named to the All-Tournament team.
“We went into the Washintgton Tournament and hadn’t won it in a while,” Love said. “We lost our own home tournament so we wanted a tournament under our belt before districts.”
Love said it was “kind of awesome” to win the Most Valuable Player award and also to get the championship for the Lady Warriors.
“It’s kind of awesome because I never really achieved anything,” Love said. “It just feels good that I could do enough to get that for myself but also the championship for my team.”
Love believes her game has improved most over the last four years in terms of being more aggressive and understanding the game more. She understands what she needs to do for Warrenton to win or just get better as a team, she said.
The Lady Warriors’ regular season will wrap up Friday with a home game against St. Charles West. They will host the district tournament. Warrenton’s first district game will be in the semifinals against the winner of McCluer North and Hazelwood East.
“Once we all communicate and we’re all on the same page and high energy, ready to go, we play really good together,” Love said when asked how the team has made strides this season. “Especially if we’re communicating and we’re all like let’s go get this. Let’s go win. It all just turns out to be the best game possible and a good, competitive game at the end of the night.”
