The shorthanded Liberty Christian Eagles fell to Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis in a home district game Monday.

Liberty Christian (2-5) fell to the Crusaders 16-5 in four innings. After falling behind 11-0 after one inning and 16-2 in the second inning, Liberty Christian’s Brody Kuehn threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Eagles.

“I liked how they grinded it out,” Liberty Christian baseball coach Bill Coovert said. “Brody came in after a couple pitchers in a bad position and he came in and threw a couple shutout innings. That was huge. So I liked that.”

Liberty Christian scored three runs in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 16-5. Two runs scored on Jack Duvel’s single. A third run scored on Levi Coovert’s RBI single. The Eagles scored two runs in the first inning on Willie Mueller’s bases loaded double.

“Our bats need to get better,” Bill Coovert said. “I can say that. If you only score five runs, it’s going to be hard to win games. We’ve got to find a way to put the bat on the ball. But I did see some bright spots tonight.”

With three seniors not available to play in the game, Liberty Christian had several players playing different positions They also had athletes see playing time who are normally on the bench. Coovert thinks the experience will help Liberty Christian in future seasons.

“It’s going to be huge because when you have three seniors that are going to be graduating next year, somebody has to step into those voids. So games like this game, Thursday when the seniors are out, it gives them an opportunity to get some game time. And it’s quality game time.”

Duvel, Coovert, Celton Kimmel and Julius Amann each reached base twice in the loss. Kimmel and Amann both drew two walks and scored a run.

Liberty Christian is slated to host Crosspoint Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
