Liberty Christian mounts rally, falls to Elsberry

Liberty Christian mounted a mid-game rally but ultimately fell to Elsberry in a road matchup last week.

After trailing by as many as 19 points in the first half, Liberty Christian (12-3) pulled within four points early in the second half. The Lady Eagles used two three-point field goals by Anna Meyer and one three-point field goal by Lauren Moss late in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 36-24 at halftime. They ended the second quarter on a 9-2 run.

“We did a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the line,” Liberty Christian girls basketball coach Butch Clark said. “We did a lousy job of hitting shots. We missed a lot of inside shots and a lot of free throws. It could have been a different ball game if we executed.”

Liberty Christian started the third quarter on a 12-4 run under three minutes into the third quarter, forcing Elsberry to call a timeout. Moss scored seven points during the 12-4 run to pull the Lady Eagles within four points. Clark said the Lady Eagles ran their transition game well early in the second half to get back in the game.

Elsberry used a 10-0 run out of a timeout to take a 14-point lead late in the quarter. Elsberry hit a pair of three pointers after the timeout to quickly regain a double digit lead. Elsberry led 50-41 at the end of the third quarter. After Elsberry senior Candice Dowell hit a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter, Liberty Christian trailed by double digits the rest of the quarter.

“They came out and hit a shot right after the timeout,” Clark said. “And then we missed and they hit another one. So they got it back up to 10 pretty quick. We didn’t respond. I thought we had our shots. We just didn’t hit them. If you’re hitting shots you look great and when you’re missing shots, we had them and just didn’t.”

Moss led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 26 points in the loss. Anna Meyer added 13 points for Liberty Christian. She hit four three-point shots. Alli Meyer scored six points. She led the Lady Eagles with 12 rebounds and five assists. Kylee Ball secured 10 rebounds. She led Liberty Christian with two blocks.

The Lady Eagles earned a 75-44 win over Bourbon Tuesday in the first round of the Bourbon Tournament. Liberty Christian outscored Bourbon 29-8 in the second quarter to take a 48-19 lead at halftime. The Lady Eagles will resume play at the Bourbon Tournament Thursday.
