The Wright City Lady Wildcats made a late push in Tuesday night’s conference loss to Louisiana.
After jumping out to an early 6-0 lead on a pair of three-point field goals from Jasmin Simpson and Danika Graham, Louisiana (5-3) outscored Wright City (6-7) 9-2 the rest of the first quarter. Louisiana outscored Wright City 17-4 in the second quarter to take a 26-12 lead into halftime.
The Lady Wildcats struggled with the Lady Bulldogs’ halfcourt trap zone defense in the first half before handling the pressure better in the second half.
“The first half, we tried to do a lot of cross court passing,” Wright City head coach Dustin Elledge said. “And that’s just too much air time for the press. Louisiana ran that pretty well. Once we settled down and were doing our nice, crisp passes, it definitely helped our game.”
After falling behind 35-18 late in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to end the quarter to trim the Louisiana lead to 35-23 after three quarters. Shiriah McRoberts and Jasmin Simpson each scored a basket for the Lady Wildcats at the end of the quarter. Zoe Mitchell connected on one free throw.
Wright City used a 6-2 run in the fourth quarter to trim the Lady Bulldog lead to nine points, and pulled within eight points later in the quarter on a three-point field goal from Graham. Louisiana pulled away late in the fourth quarter to earn the 54-40 win over Wright City.
“The second half, our intensity level was what we’ve been preaching kind of all season,” Elledge said. “We kind of took our dip in the second quarter and we really responded to that after the half. And played that high intensity basketball game that helped us try and get back into it.”
Simpson led Wright City with 19 points. Graham scored eight points for Wright City. Katie Schanuel added six points for the Lady Wildcats.
