Fresh off a district title, the Warrenton Lady Warriors are looking for more postseason success under first-year coach Hannah Logan. 

The Lady Warriors beat St. Dominic 45-41 last year to win their fifth district title in eight seasons. With the success the Lady Warriors experienced last year and over the course of former coach Greg Williams’ tenure, the Lady Warriors are focused on continuing their recent success on the hardwood. They have their sights set on winning another district title and earning wins over teams they lost to last season. 

“It’s been very clear what our expectations are,” Logan said. “And that we want to win. So that’s been great. That’s been the tone. We come in ready to practice as we’re going to win this practice as if it was a game. So that’s been a great mentality that they’ve kept through the whole three weeks.”

The Lady Warriors return multiple key contributors from last year’s team. Seniors Zoe Klaus, Kaelyn Meyer, Audrey Payne and Kendall Taylor all were key contributors on last year’s district championship team that finished the season 17-10. Senior Anna Wade also returns to the team this season. 

Logan said all five seniors are great leaders for the underclassmen. 

“They’ve really stepped up and they lead how practices should be,” Logan said. “And the communication, the speed, getting ready, how things operate. They have been great leaders.”

Overall, Logan liked what she saw from the Lady Warriors in their first few weeks of practice. 

“It’s been a really great start,” Logan said earlier this month. “The girls are working really hard. They’ve been very coachable.”

There are 23 players in the program this season, including several new players this season. There are 11 players on the varsity roster. Logan anticipates playing eight or nine players in the regular rotation this season. 

“I’ve let the girls know practice determines your playing time,” Logan said. “So if you go hard in practice, you’re going to get more chances. But if you don’t go hard in practice, then what we see at practice is what we think we’re going to see in a game.”

Logan believes the Lady Warriors are adjusting well to the change with the coaching staff. Logan is joined on the Warrenton coaching staff by assistants Kayla Nelson and Brooke Smith, who are also in their first year on the Lady Warriors coaching staff. All three have previous basketball coaching experience.

Warrenton dropped their first two games of the season to Troy Buchanan and Quincy Notre Dame. They were scheduled to play at Silex Tuesday. They will host Sullivan at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.
