Warrenton drops GAC North opener to Orchard Farm

The shorthanded Warrenton Lady Warriors dropped their conference opener at Orchard Farm Tuesday.

Warrenton (2-5) fell to Orchard Farm 8-0. Orchard Farm scored their first goal 22 seconds into the first half. They scored their second goal less than 10 miuntes later. The Eagles  added three goals in the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.

Orchard Farm’s lone goal in the first 24 minutes of the second half was on a penalty kick. The Eagles scored goals in the 65th and 70th minutes to secure the 8-0 win.

“The first 10 minutes were not very good but then we picked it up for a while and did well,” Warrenton girls soccer coach Amy Wargowsky said. “And then it’s almost like we started to fall apart when they’d score.”

Warrenton played Tuesday night’s conference clash without senior Megyn Young and junior Ashlynn Reeves, who are both starting defenders for the Lady Warriors. Reeves hurt her ankle during Monday night’s loss to Capital City. Young had some ongoing injury issues.

“I just said with the grass it’s just not worth it this early in the season to compound injuries,” Wargowsky said. “So that changes things too when you have people that don’t normally play the positions playing.”

Wargowsky said Orchard Farm presented a challenge for the Lady Warriors, especially the defenders filling in for Reeves and Young. Orchard Farm is very quick and is good with positioning and ball placement, Wargowsky said.

Wargowsky added Orchard Farm plays a unique style, with five players definitely on offense and five players definitively on defense. However, they bring three defenders up on offense throughout the game.

“Then the girls are like who am I supposed to watch because it’s not traditional positioning,” Wargowsky said. “And that’s where it gets confusing for them. And I said that’s when you have to talk and say I have this person, you’ve got this person and watch them switching because they should start to form a pattern. And then you can go this girl’s going to go there. This girl’s going to go there. It’s just a learning curve for a lot of them.”

Despite playing seven games so far this season, Wargowsky anticipates it will take a few games before the Lady Warriors have everything figured out on the pitch. She noted they played their first several games with players gone for Spring Break. They played the past couple games with certain players out with injuries.

“I’m still optimistic and we’ve got some good players,” Wargowsky said. “It’s just getting them to put it all together.”

Prior to dropping Monday’s game to Capital City, Warrenton notched their second win of the season with a 7-0 win over Mexico last week. Morgan Marschel, Kylie Overkamp and Camryn Petersmeyer all scored two goals in the win. Breeyn Young scored one goal in last week’s win over Mexico. Marschel scored two goals in Monday’s loss to Capital City.
