The Warrenton Lady Warriors remained perfect in GAC North play with a 19-point win over St. Charles West Friday night.
Warrenton (12-8) beat St. Charles West 45-26 to move to 6-0 in GAC North play.
Holding a 26-22 midway through the third quarter, the Lady Warriors went on a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Lady Warriors used three points from both Sophi Mueller and Audrey Payne to extend their lead to 32-22. Isabel Benke and Nyasia Love each knocked down a three-point field goal to give Warrenton a 38-22 lead. The Lady Warriors led 38-24 at the end of the third quarter.
Warrenton girls basketball coach Hannah Logan said the Lady Warriors were waiting for the play to happen on offense early in the game. They put an emphasis on getting the ball to the elbows to put stress on the St. Charles West zone defense.
“We told them they’re going to be open and you need to be ready to score,” Logan said. “Have your feet set and look inside if they’re open. If not, kick it back out. So that was an adjustment we made at halftime. Against the zone, you prefer less dribbles and more passing. But for this day, we needed to break the defense down.”
The Lady Warriors led most of the first half and carried a 24-17 lead into halftime. Warrenton led 15-7 after the first quarter. Benke hit a pair of three-point field goals late in the quarter to give the Lady Warriors the eight-point lead. St. Charles West used an 8-2 run in the second quarter to pull within three points. Mueller scored a pair of baskets to give Warrenton the seven-point lead heading into halftime.
“Nyasia Love, Kaelyn Meyer and Sophie Mueller came in,” Logan said. “Those three stepped it up. They were moving and making the extra pass on offense to get us those good looks.”
With the win, Warrenton maintained their lead in the GAC North. The Lady Warriors currently sit two games ahead of Orchard Farm, who is 3-1 in conference games.
“We’re right where we want to be for our goal and are undefeated in conference play,” Logan said. “So now from here on out, we have the Washington Tournament and after that, it’s conference games. So we just have to come out ready to go for every game.”
Warrenton beat Ursuline 50-40 Monday in the first round of the Washington Tournament. Warrenton fell to Francis Howell Central 44-30 in the semifinals. The Lady Warriors are scheduled to play Washington in the third place game at 7 p.m. Friday at Washington High School.
