Warrenton softball player Kiera Daniel is no stranger to breaking school records. In 2023, she broke the record for stolen bases in a season (44) and the average for stolen bases per game in a season (1.571).
After the team’s first few games of the 2024 season, Daniel has now added another school record to her resume, surpassing the number of career stolen bases at 69.
The Warriors played in the Union tournament this past weekend, where Daniel was able to reach that goal. Daniel had no idea she was even close to breaking the school record until one of her coaches told her.
“I had just scored and then I went to the dugout and Coach Dodge goes dude you just broke a school record and I was like no way, I had no idea,” Daniel said.
Daniel has stolen three bases so far this season and Head Coach Chad Berrey is expecting more.
When asked what’s next, Daniel responded that she wants to get the most career hits.
“Jenny Jansen currently holds it and she has a really high number, but I think that if I keep doing what I’m doing, I can get close to breaking it,” Daniel said.
On Sept. 3, Daniel accomlished her 100th career hit.
Throughout the weekend, Daniel also recorded three runs, 11 outs and one double.
The Warriors lost all three games during the tournament. Against Union, the Warriors fell 16-1 and then later that day lost to Elsberry 6-2. On Saturday morning, Warrenton started to make a comeback in the third inning, but lost 12-9 against Jefferson City.
After the tournament, Berrey told the team that this weekend does not define them.
Berrey showed the team a printed off schedule from the 2021 season where they had lost four straight games, even getting mercy ruled at the Troy Lead Off Tournament. The rest of the schedule showed the team winning nine games in a row and securing the district title.
“The opening weekend tournament is for getting games, experience and looking at how we get better,” Berrey said. “We’re looking for conference and looking for districts because it’s an exact representation and it’s mirroring the 2021 season.”
Since the tournament, the team has played two games and won both of them. On Sept. 3, the Warriors beat St. Charles West 11-7. The next day, Warrenton won their game agaisnt St. Francis Borgia 10-8.
The team will host Holt on Sept. 5 at 4:15 p.m.
