Warrenton will send five athletes to the Class 4 state track and field meet after qualifying for state in six events at last weekend’s sectional tournament.

Warrenton qualified in three running events and three field events at last weekend’s Class 4, Sectional 2 meet at Mexico High School. Nine Warriors competed at last weekend’s sectional competition.

“We went out and competed really hard,” Warrenton track and field  coach John Jeskey said. “Not everyone got through that we were hoping would but there was some excellent marks out there in the sectional event from some other competitors.”

After qualifying four athletes for the state meet last season, Warrenton sends five athletes to the Class 4 state meet. Four of the five athletes will compete at state for the first time later this week.

Sophomore Avery Shaw was the lone Warrior to qualify for state in two separate events. Shaw placed third in the shot put competition and fourth in the discus competition. Senior Deacon Forrest placed third in the high jump competition to qualify for state.

Three Warrior athletes each qualified for one running event. Senior Madelyn Marschel will return to the state meet after placing third in the 800-meter run. Senior Zach Bristol and sophomore Morgan Marschel each qualified in the Class 4 400-meter dash competition. Marschel finished second in her race. Bristol earned a third place finish.

Despite being seeded fifth heading into the race, Bristol placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.97 seconds. This is the first season Bristol competed in the 400-meter dash.

“His performance jumped out to me,” Jeskey said. “He beat his seeding. He was seeded fifth and finished third. And improved by two seconds in the 400 meter. That’s a huge feat to accomplish right there. He was outside of state placement on the initial paper but got in at the third position.”

Four other Warriors also competed at the sectional competition. Wyatt Claiborne qualified for sectionals in four events. Claiborne placed sixth in the 1600-meter run. He placed seventh in the 800-meter run. He also placed seventh as part of the 4x800-meter relay team, along with Forrest, Bryan Guerrero and Phillip Kackley. Claiborne qualified for the 3200-meter run but did not compete in the race at sectionals.

Senior Colton Brosenne competed at sectionals in two field events. Brosenne placed sixth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.

The state qualifiers’ focus quickly shifted this week to the upcoming state meet. Jeskey said the focus earlier in the week was on body maintenance for the athletes.

“We’re going to keep on going through our normal routines and we’re going to base that on how the kids are feeling,” Jeskey said. “So I know for my throwers, which is mainly my expertise, I have a throw limit on her to make sure we’re not wearing out her arm too much when we’re going through. Just maintaining, making sure she’s feeling alright approaching that Friday and Saturday with two events.”

Jeskey said earlier in the week they already started preparing the athletes for what to expect at Friday and Saturday’s state meet. For the four athletes who have never competed at the state meet, it will be much larger than any track meet in which they have competed.

“That’s part of the reason why we’re getting up there Thursday,” Jeskey said. “We’re going to go and we’re going to tour the facility. Show them where each one of their events are. Show them what the expectations are. Because there’s a lot more people at this track meet than there have been at any other. It’s the most strict for rules too. They need to make sure that they’re there when they get called. They need to get checked in. They need to be at the right spot because there’s no leniency if you’re not.”
