Fresh off earning all-state track honors last spring, Devin Myers is looking towards the upcoming football season.

Born in Tennessee, the Wright City incoming senior has gone to school in the Wright City district since fourth grade. He has played football since eighth grade and ran on the track team since seventh grade.

Myers was part of the 4x200-relay team that placed sixth in Class 3 at the state track and field meet last season. Myers ran the relay with recent graduates Jeremiah Davis, Blake Hogan and David Riggs.

“It was honestly awesome,” Myers said. “I’ve never been to state before and I’ve never been named all-state. So I mean getting it for the first time, it’s just great. It feels really good to be known and let people all around Missouri know Wright City’s here. We can compete against you guys.”

Myers is set to play on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball for his senior football season. He will play left tackle on offense and right outside linebacker on defense.  Myers registered 35 solo tackles and 30 tackle assists on defense last season. He added four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.

Q: Have you stayed at the same position since eighth grade?

I’ve been moved all around. I started out as a corner and safety. And then I got moved to inside backer. And then they moved me to outside backer. And then on offense, I was a receiver and then they moved me to running back for JV. And then I got moved again to tackle for lineman. So I’ve been moved all around. I’m like a swiss army knife you could say.

Q: Are you used to playing both offense and defense during games?

I’ve done that ever since eighth grade. I’ve played both sides of the ball every year.

Q: Is there a challenge with conditioning playing both ways?

I feel like I’m in good enough shape but at times it gets a little rough and I can get gassed. But I just need a one play break and then I’m good.

Q: Have you run the same events in track or have those fluctuated?

Those have all been the same. I’ve always been just a short distance sprinter. I’ve done 100, 200, 4x100, 4x200 and triple jump. That’s about it.

Q: Do you prefer the individual races or relays?

I would much rather do relays because if I get burned and I don’t know if I would but if I get beat, then I have four other people that can help pick it up for me. It just relieves a lot of stress.

Q: Does last year’s experience motivate you to try to get back to the state meet this season?

Yeah. It definitely pushes me a little bit harder because I know I can do it and it’s definitely possible. It makes me want to try even harder

Q: Do you prefer one sport over the other?

For actually competing, I like football more. But for fun, I like track.
