Accused counterfeiter arrested in Marthasville

A Marthasville man was arrested and charged last week for counterfeiting and other crimes after allegedly using fake cash to buy items at a local store.

Shawn J. Summers, 50, was arrested March 2 and charged with forgery, possession of a forging instrument, and drug manufacturing, according to online court records. More than 100 counterfeit bills were located at his home on Lakeshore Drive in Marthasville, along with drug-making supplies, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.

Summers is currently being held at the Warren County Jail with bond set at $25,000.

Sheriff’s deputies began investigating the case when they were contacted by the owner of S&R Convenience Store in Marthasville, according to a statement submitted to the county court. The owner told deputies that Summers, who was known to the owner, had used two fake $5 bills and a $10 bill to purchase items from S&R.

Investigators who examined the two $5 bills noted that they had the exact same serial number. The deputies quickly secured a warrant to search Summers’ home on Lakeshore Drive, and found over 100 fake bills, including some that had not yet been cut from the paper they were printed on, according to the sheriff’s department. The bills were in denominations of $1, $5, $10, and $20.

Summers was taken into custody and questioned, during which he allegedly admitted to using home printers to scan and reproduce the currency. He also allegedly admitted to spending the counterfeit money at four different local businesses.

During the search of Summers’ home, deputies also identified a number of items needed to manufacture methamphetamine, the sheriff’s department alleges. Summers reportedly admitted to manufacturing his own meth because he has no (legitimate) money. He allegedly made the drug for his own personal use.

Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison released information about the arrest on March 3, adding that deputies have also contacted the United States Secret Service, which is the agency that handles counterfeiting cases at the federal level.

“I am proud of our detectives and deputies, and for all our citizens and merchants that are contributing to these investigations,” Harrison commented.
