A lot of new faces bring excitement to Wright City volleyball this year

With the loss of multiple starters from last year’s 10-win team, Wright City Head Coach Christine Goldsmith is approaching the upcoming season as a building year.

Wright City brings back three seniors with multiple seasons of varsity experience: Hailey Beaty, Kobie Griffitt and Cayle Redmon. Junior Alexei Gatewood also saw time on the volleyball court last season. Nearly half of the players on Wright City’s varsity roster are freshmen.

“We had open gyms throughout the summer and it got a lot of people used to a lot of new people,” Redmon said. “And we’ve been working together to really try and find a bond where we can make the season great.”

Goldsmith said the younger players are taking on responsibility and trying really hard to step into their roles. They are “really excited for the challenge,” Goldsmith said. However, she stressed it is going to be a learning process for the entire team.

There will be more of a focus on team bonding this season, according to Goldsmith. She cited the number of new players in the fold this season. They are focused on building some really good team friendships, Goldsmith said.

“I think we have a lot of potential to have a good team rapport,” Goldsmith said. “Because you know, sometimes if you have girls that have been together for a really long time, they get annoyed with each other like siblings do. So I think a new team gives us a better fresh start so that we can kind of move into a new direction.”

Goldsmith believes the Lady Wildcats’ strength may be on the offensive end, with multiple hitters returning from last year’s team. She is hopeful they can “execute what we did last year.”

She thinks the Lady Wildcats’ productive summer helped them prepare for the upcoming season. Early in fall practice, they focused on the basics.

“Right now we’re mostly just trying to get the basics down and try and see where everyone’s at,” Redmon said earlier this month. “And then we’re soon going to start working on our lineups for who’s gonna be playing where and how it’s going to go.”

Overall, Goldsmith is focusing on seeing progress on the volleyball court this season.

“For this year, I think we’re gonna focus on the process,” Goldsmith said. “Of course I want our record to reflect success, but I think with these girls it’s gonna be really awesome to see their progression as individuals and as a new team.”

Wright City is slated to host Intensity Home School at 6 p.m. Aug. 28.
