5 Warriors compete at state track and field meet

Five Warrenton track and field athletes competed at the Class 4 Missouri  state track and field meet last week.

Of the five Warriors to compete at the state meet, four athletes competed at the state meet for the first time. Madelyn Marschel competed at the state meet for the third time. Head coach Mark Thomas stressed the number of people at the state meet can impact competitors who have never competed at the state level.

“I’m just happy with the kids,” Thomas said. “The honor is getting there and whatever you can do there is just icing on the cake. It’s a neat experience for everyone involved.”

Three Warrenton athletes made it to the state meet in their senior season. Zach Bristol and Deacon Forrest both competed at the state meet for the first time as seniors. Bristol placed 13th in the Class 4 400-meter dash preliminary race. He finished the race in 51.99 seconds. Forrest competed in the high jump.

Madelyn Marschel placed 15th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:28.61. Marschel competed at the state level in all three years they held a state tournament in both track and cross country. Marschel was unable to compete as a freshman. There was no state meet that year in response to COVID-19.

“To say you’ve been to state in both of your sports every state that you have an opportunity to be in, that’s pretty neat and special,” Thomas said. “So it was a pretty cool experience for her at the end of the day just to say she had done it for all three years.”

Sophomores Morgan Marschel and Avery Shaw both competed at state for the first time. Marschel competed in the Class 4 400-meter dash. Marschel placed 13th in the preliminary race with a time of 1:01. Shaw competed in both the shot put and discus competitions. She placed 15th in the discus competition with a throw of 27.49 meters. Shaw placed 16th in the shot put with a mark of 9.62 meters.

“I think it’s going to motivate and drive them,” Thomas said. “Now they know how it is and what to expect. Hopefully, they can communicate that to more of their teammates to try to encourage them to know this is a really cool opportunity. Let’s get a bigger group there and let’s grow this thing a little more.”

Thomas also noted the benefits of younger siblings of state qualifiers attending the state meet. He hopes the state buildup will encourage more people to get involved in track and field and try to reach that top level.

Thomas said he and coach John Jeskey were pleasantly surprised with how well the Warriors competed in meets throughout the season. The coaching staff originally thought they would be more individual based. Thomas noted they had a couple meets where the Warriors were near the top of the team standings. He also credited the newcomers for their overall competitiveness throughout the track and field season.

“I think that overall as a team this year, boys and girls, we were really pleased with the performances and how hard everybody worked,” Thomas said. “And we look forward to them coming back and bringing in these eighth graders that have some talent coming in as well.”
