Wright City softball opens year on losing end

The Wright City softball team is identifying new role players as it enters the 2020 season.

The Wildcats have begun the campaign 0-3, despite displaying the ability to generate runs.

The program opened its season on Aug. 29 with the traditional trip to the Booneville Tournament, which featured a modified round robin approach.

The Wildcats faced the host team in each of its contests, returning home winless.

The first matchup was a 9-2 setback to the Pirates, with Madison Hamlett taking the loss on the mound. She tossed six innings, giving up nine earned runs, while walking two and striking out two batters.

Wright City recorded five hits, with Hamlett accounting for two of those.

The team committed three errors.

The Wildcats dropped a 14-10 setback later that afternoon, with Kendall taking the mound. She gave up four earned runs, while walking one and striking out one through 3.1 innings pitched.

Emma Thomas came in for relief, tossing three innings, while giving up seven earned runs, walking four and fanning one batter.

Kendall also recorded two hits and two RBI.

The Wildcats committed two errors.

Wright City opened its Eastern Missouri Conference schedule with a 9-6 setback to Elsberry on Sept. 3.

The Wildcats took command early, ahead 4-1, but fell victim to seven runs by the opponent during the sixth inning.

Wright City tallied six hits but committed a costly three errors.

Hamlett started on the mound, giving up 12 hits and six earned runs through 5.1 innings pitched. She walked three while striking out another three.

Kendall came in for relief, walking one and retiring two batters through 1.2 innings pitched.

As a team, Wright City recorded six hits, including two by Abby Vossen. Kendall finished with three RBI, with Adison Fast contributing another two RBI. Kylie Jarmuszkiewcz recorded a double.

As a team the Wildcats committed three errors.

Wright City was scheduled to host Montgomery County on Thursday, before traveling to Louisiana next Tuesday.
