It didn’t seem to matter from what location the Warrenton girls basketball team released the ball on Friday night.

Shots were just not falling for the Warriors.

It spelled a disappointing road trip outcome for Warrenton, who dropped a 34-26 setback to GAC North foe St. Charles.

“We were missing everything,” lamented Coach Greg Williams. “We really didn’t start making shots until later in the game.”

The Warriors shot just 10 for 42 from the field, making only three of 19 attempts beyond the perimeter.

“Defensively, we played well enough to win,” said Williams. “But they banked some shots in, and we were ice cold. That’s kind of occurred frequently. At Quincy we went zero for 18 at the three-point line, so we’ve struggled there.”

Senior Brooke Smith accounted for half of Warrenton’s offense, scoring 13 points.

St. Charles got out to an 11-2 lead after one quarter, quickly relinquishing its defeat to the Warriors earlier in the season.

“They always play us well, especially after we beat them pretty handily at our place,” said Williams.

Warrenton was playing its second road game in as many nights, coming off a tournament the previous week. Williams says it was a tall task for a team with limited depth.

“We’ve got to stay fresh,” said Williams. “It’s a lot of basketball in a little bit of time, so we’ve got to get our legs back underneath us.”

By the time the Warriors found the nets, outscoring St. Charles 12-6 in the fourth quarter, the margin was too wide.

“We just weren’t able to fight back, and that put a lot of pressure on our defense,” said Williams.

Audrey Payne added five points for the Warriors.
