Any ideas that the Warrenton boys basketball team had of upsetting top seed St. Dominic in the Class 5, District 8 Tournament were quickly erased.

The Crusaders raced out to a 26-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back in an 81-32 rout of the Warriors on March 2.

St. Dominic held a 49-16 lead at halftime and outscored Warrenton 27-13 in the third quarter.

Warrenton made only 11 of 39 shots (28 percent) from the field and was 3 of 19 (16 percent) from long range.

Joe Goldsmith was the lone player to reach double figures for the Warriors with 13 points. Andrew Cox followed with eight and Chase Cook added five.

St. Dominic received 18 points from Anthony Lewis and 15 from Brendan Deters. As a team, the Crusaders made 15 three-pointers and shot 41 percent from long range.

The loss ended a 1-19 campaign for the Warriors, who finished the year with 14 straight losses. The Warriors’ lone win came against St. Clair on Jan. 15.

Warrenton will lose three seniors — Dalton Blechle, Cook and Cox.

St. Dominic knocked off No. 2 Fort Zumwalt South 59-31 in the district championship on March 5. The Bulldogs had beaten No. 3 Zumwalt East 65-39 in the first round.

The Crusaders were scheduled to face DeSmet on Tuesday in sectionals. The winner will face either Cardinal Ritter or Jennings in the quarterfinals on March 12.
