Warriors enter final stretch run with postseason on horizon

Posted

The Warrenton baseball team’s tremendous season is now in the final week of the regular season with the district tournament a week away.

The Warriors entered the week sporting a 20-4-1 record, losing 4-2 to Troy Buchanan in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday and watching a tight 1-1 contest finally called in the 15th inning after a lightning delay.

Warrenton was scheduled to face Christian on Tuesday and will host Chaminade at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Its final regular season game is Monday at Borgia.

In the first game versus Troy, senior pitcher Ben Peth struck out five and walked two in six innings. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned. He scattered six hits.

The Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to overcome an early 2-1 deficit.

In the second game that was suspended, it was a classic pitchers’ duel. The trio of Warrenton hurlers Troy Anderson, Carter Matin and Tyler Oliver combined for 13 strikes and worked their way around eight walks. They allowed only six hits in 15 innings.

Austin Haas continues to lead the offensive, with a .513 batting average with 38 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

Despite its lofty record this spring, the Warriors are in a loaded district field. The Class 5, District 4 Tournament kicks off Thursday, May 16, with Warrenton receiving the fourth seed and opening against No. 5 Hannibal at 4 p.m. at Veterans Sports Complex in Hannibal.

The winner will advance to the semifinals the following day with a 1 p.m. matchup against either No. 1 Fort Zumwalt South or No. 8 St. Charles.

In the other first-round games, No. 2 St. Dominic and No. 7 Holt square off, while No. 3 Fort Zumwalt West and No. 6 North Point will meet.

The championship game will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Zumwalt East High School.
