The Warrenton softball team had seven players earn All-Gateway Athletic Conference North honors for the 2019 season.
Hailey Roberts, Kennady Estes and Michelle Higby were selected to the first team, along with Player of the Year Kathryn McChristy.
Dani Schlager, Kaylin Haas and Avery Tucker were named to the second team with skipper Chad Berrey chosen as Coach of the Year.
Roberts, a junior shortstop, was also a first team all-region and first team all-district honoree.
She led the Warriors in nearly every offensive category, finishing with a .410 batting average, .462 on-base percentage, eight doubles, six home runs, 37 RBIs and 19 runs scored. She was especially good in league games, swatting all but one of her home runs against conference competition. That includes a memorable performance in the first game at Warrenton’s new softball field where Roberts was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and eight RBIs in a 15-5 win over Winfield.
“Hailey receiving all-region honors was very exciting, but not a surprise,” Berrey said. “She’s proof that great players are made in the offseason. She’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen and pushed the whole program to get better every day. Her timely hitting definitely turned some heads She has all-state in her sight for next season and with her work ethic you can expect huge things.”
Estes, a junior first baseman, was also a first team all-district choice. She hit .388 (31-for-80) with two triples, a home run, 16 RBIs and scored 17 runs.
“It was a breakout year offensively for Kennady,” Berrey said. “She had the second highest average on the team and always seemed to be on base. She was a major contributor to our increased run production.”
Higby, a junior outfielder, was an all-district second teamer and hit .352 (25-for-71) with five doubles, a triple, eight RBIs and 15 runs scored. She was second on the team in on-base percentage at .439 and first in walks with eight.
“Michele’s a stellar outfielder with incredible range,” Berrey said. “We moved her into the leadoff spot and she sprayed the ball all over the field. She can hit it to either side and has speed and power. If she picks up where she left off this year she could stand among the best hitters in the area in 2020.”
Schlager, a rangy senior outfielder, was Warrenton’s last remaining player from the 2016 state championship team. She hit .317 (26-for-82) with six doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs and 16 runs scored. She also had a team-leading seven stolen bases.
“Dani was our commander and chief of the outfield,” Berrey said. “She was everything a coach could ask for – an amazing team player, athletic, talented, committed and coachable. She demonstrated everything Warrenton softball is about and was a leader on and off the field.”
Tucker, a junior catcher, hit .333 (24-for-72) with four doubles and 11 RBIs.
“She was the other half of our successful battery to go along with McChristy,” Berrey said. “Avery was a wall behind the plate and did a great job in the clean up role. She also did a good job of leading in the dugout and kept our team in the right mental state to be successful.”
Haas, a sophomore outfielder, hit .323 (20-for-62) with four doubles, eight RBIs and 11 runs scored.
“Kaylin was a first-year varsity player and really stepped up big,” Berrey said. “She fought for a spot in the lineup and proved she deserved it. She put together an impressive year and was our earned our All-GAC North Sportsmanship award.”
In addition to winning their sixth conference championship in seven years, the Warriors got it done in the classroom with a 3.49 team GPA. Academic all-conference honorees were Estes, Haas, Higby, McChristy, Schlager, Tucker, Kiersten Anderson, Emalee Cregar, Nicole DiSilvester, Mackenzie Hurst, Joni Marschel and Jocelyn Martin.
